Matrix
NY’s DJ MATRIX has been involved in Dance Music for over three decades, firmly establishing his signature style, and is widely known for creating inimitable musical experiences for fans and dance aficionados of House, Tribal House, Deep and Soulful House music.
Born and bred in New York City’s East Harlem/El Barrio neighborhood, known as a hot bed of creativity and diverse cultural expressions, and hailing from a musical family, MATRIX’s musical ear was trained by his grandfather who was a session trumpet player in the heyday of the big band era. At the age of 13 he began listening to the WBLS Saturday Night Dance Party on the radio which featured continuous disco dance mixes by legendary DJ Ted Courier. He was fascinated by his ability to smoothly blend music into a seamless mosaic, thus was inspired and drawn to the turntables with the desire to create his own musical tapestry for people to experience.
MATRIX became a much sought after local DJ who performed at local celebrations and events. At the age of 16, he was discovered at one of these events by the manager of premier Latin Nightclub the Corso and began DJ’ing between live musical sets—a gig that lasted nearly three years, and at the time MATRIX was not even 20 years old.
MATRIX hit his stride and honed his skills from the late 80’s to the mid 90’s with residencies and guest appearances at a rich array of venues including some of New York City’s most legendary and influential dance clubs. These included such venues as the infamous Limelight, The Arena, Better Days, The Adams Apple (a leading destination for dance music in the 70’s) and The Palladium. During this time and for nearly a decade, MATRIX also performed regularly at Save the Robots, one of New York City’s hippest underground, after hour’s spots in the East Village. Other MATRIX club career highlights include having performed at New York City nightspots Nell’s, Designs, Demarara, Kabala, NV, Ice Bar, El Flamingo, Studio Mezmor (formerly, Crow Bar), and The Octogon (both in the Chelsea club district), WonderBar in mid-town, Manhattan, Touch on Miami’s South Beach, in Manhattan’s Lower East Side and Greenwich Village at Tapis Rogue, Remote Lounge, Vig Bar, and many others as well as playing with and alongside world renown DJ’s such as Bruce Forrest, Steve “Chip Chop” Gonzalez, DJ Romain, DJ Smash, Hector Romero and Midnight Society.
In 2012 MATRIX continues to expand his following with the newly launched “The Sounds of the New York Underground” Radio Station on Live365.com where he serves as the Music and Program Director. He is also the co-founder (with his partner Will Alonso) and President of H.O.S. Music Inc., a New York based dance imprint making it’s mark releasing high quality dance floor friendly house music.
In MATRIX’s own words, “I love to see people responding to the music and am fueled by the excitement of the crowd. No two performances are ever the same. In this interplay with the audience, akin to the African call and response, which inspires my work so deeply, I strive to create an environment of collective harmony and unity—one where we are all on an idyllic ride together and through music realize that there is, without a doubt, a deeper and greater good. I’m motivated to get back out on the world stage at festivals and clubs to share my music with a broader audience and, to continue work on productions and remixes with artist tracks to maximize the impact and potential of their vision”.
