Cary Vance
Cary began his music industry career in 1985, working at the legendary New York City record shop Vinyl Mania. He began promoting Vinyl Mania Records’ first releases in 1986. He met producer Todd Terry and released the dance classic “Why You Wanna Go” by Fascination.
Vance moved to Virgin Records in 1987, as the head of Dance Promotion. During his nearly five years at the major label, he helped create successful plans that established such artists as Paula Abdul, Lenny Kravitz, Inner City, Soul II Soul and Neneh Cherry. Vance also was co-Executive Producer on the Platinum-plus selling LP “Shut Up and Dance” by Paula Abdul.
In 1991, Vance started his own marketing and promotion company and had success with “Push the Feeling On” by the Night Crawlers and “Murder, She Wrote” by Chaka Demus & Pliers. The following year, Vance joined forces with Issy Sanchez at Elite Promotions. They had tremendous success with Captain Hollywood’s “More and More” and “Whoot! There It Is” by 95S.
Profile Records hired him in 1994 as Head of Promotion. Vance was involved with the legendary Run DMC and had success with DJ Quik, Second II None and N2Deep, 2 Bad Mice’s “Bombscare,” and the Mighty Dub Cats’ “Magic Carpet Ride.” Vance became Head of Promotion for Robbins Entertainment in 1996. After helping the indie label gain major success with hit singles Rockell’s “I Fell in Love” and Crush’s “Jellyhead,” he was presented with the opportunity to return to Virgin Records in 1997.
During his second time at Virgin as Vice President, Promotion, Vance helped establish or reestablish such talented artists as: the Spice Girls, Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, Lenny Kravitz, Aaliyah, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Mariah Carey, Shaggy, Daft Punk, Melanie C, Fatboy Slim and the Basement Jaxx. Among his numerous accomplishments at Virgin, he helped make “Try Again” by Aaliyah the first-ever airplay-only single to go #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Vance also created the plan for Ms. Jackson’s “All For You,” making it the first single ever to have every R&R Reporting Mainstream Top 40, Rhythm Top 40 and R&B Radio Station in the country during its first week of release.
Vance left Virgin Records in 2002 to join Promo Only, Inc. as President, Promo Only Promotions, where he continues to be involved with the marketing and promotion campaigns for the biggest artists in the music business.
